In "All & Everything" Gurdjieff makes the controversial statement that not only does nothing like 'light', 'darkness', 'heat', and so on, come to this planet (Earth) from their Sun itself. This is a misquotation, the concept originating from Dr. Otoman Zar-Adusht-Hanish who gave a clearer and most important explanation prior to 1902 . He said: "Our Planet is a light unto itself. One is a light unto oneself." This is emphasis on individuality and to do all one can from oneself as a start, then more will be added unto you. In the Gurdjieff version the word 'directly' is important. The Sun does not heat and light the Earth directly. It is the result of an interaction, a relationship. In the same way we need to relate to that which is Higher and then we will receive the warmth and light from above. In order to relate to that which is Higher, we need first to use our abilities to quieten our ordinary conscious mind in order that contact can be made first with the personal unconscious and later of the unified lower personal mind with Higher Mind.
