I remember as a boy being interested in telephony and so I read the standard technical books. These told me that for a conversation two wires were needed and that a typical telephone cable contained many pairs of such wires, each carrying a conversation. But then it became the practice to use pairs as pairs for extra conversations. These pair of pairs where known as Phantom Circuits since they had no real existence, or rather represented another level of abstraction.

I also remember being off Pitcairn Island with the ship laying to since there is no anchorage there. The island's long boats came out, and if one looked over the side of the ship, the long boat would rise and fall on the wave some 20 feet. At the top of the rise someone would grasp the bottom of the rope ladder and scramble aboard the big ship. The wave appeared to only rise and fall, but from a greater perspective it did not rise and fall but moved forward. There was no forward movement of the water, only of the rise and fall. Here again the apparent forward movement of the wave was a higher level function.

For me this all relates to the Three Brain Being. As consciousness or awareness develops and one becomes aware of the functioning of the three different aspects of mentation, one begins to be able to use them instead of them mechanically responding to external events. Then one begins to be able to use them additively and this addition represents a higher level function. In the ultimate one is able to use them interactively so that an even higher level function is operating. Another Phantom Circuit. Is this Higher Mind? I think not. Higher Mind or the Universal Mind is far beyond this level. When the stage has been reached at which the three brains or minds are used additively or even interactively, this is when the individual has realised what is possible for it, its personal evolution in this life. At this stage there is an awareness of the personal conscious mind and the personal unconscious mind. At this stage there is the possibility of creating a bridge between the individual mind and the Universal Mind, the Collective Unconscious.
