The Adventures of a Solitary Soul

My beginning was in 1922, when my mother just about got off the boat from New York in time for me to be born shortly after in Southampton. I suppose I was a last resort on behalf of mother and father to have a family. First, during the first world war, they had a girl whom they named Winefride. She, however, had a malformed heart and died at the age of three. Just before she died my father was given compassionate leave from the trenches in France to enable him to see her for the first time. She died while he was at home. At the same time most of his regiment was wiped out in France, so as a result of her death it could be said that he survived to father two further children.

The next was a boy who died at birth. Finally I came along, by which time my mother was approaching forty years of age.
